Recent data from the SWA shows that India has already reclaimed the top spot from France as the largest market for Scotch whisky by volume, with nearly 192 million bottles shipped.

India is expected to overtake all other nations to become the world’s largest Scotch whisky market in both value and volume within the next few years, according to Mark Kent CMG, Chief Executive of the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA). He attributes this projection to India’s fast-growing economy, strong competition among brands, and the rising consumer shift toward premium spirits.

Recent data from the SWA shows that India has already reclaimed the top spot from France as the largest market for Scotch whisky by volume, with nearly 192 million bottles shipped. While the country currently ranks among the top five by value, the association expects India to climb even higher once import duties are lowered and new trade opportunities emerge, as per a PTI report.

“The combination of market growth and a more competitive import environment following a Free Trade Agreement between the UK and India will place India as the biggest by value as well,” Kent told PTI, expressing optimism about the sector’s trajectory.

Stronger Ties with Indian Whisky Producers

The SWA chief highlighted the importance of deepening collaboration with India’s growing single malt industry, noting its success in recent global competitions. Kent said he plans to engage with the Indian Malt Whisky Association to explore partnerships aimed at promoting high-quality standards and expanding into new markets.
